How We Found the Giant Squid
Edith Widder has been researching the giant squid for years. The various machinery used to explore the deep sea, however, has been produced to be extremely loud. This ultimately scares the deep sea predators and results in the researches never getting the chance to see an image of the animal. To solve this problem, Widder developed a machine that produces nearly no sound. When this machinery was put into action in the deep sea, she could not believe her eyes. A giant squid swam up right to the camera, giving a first glimpse of an animal that had escaped the camera for decades. The squid was the height of a two story building.
This video was interesting to me because of the mystery of the deep sea. Because of this new silent technology, many more species of deep sea animals will be able to be found and video recorded. Nearly 95% of the ocean has not been explored by humans, and this technology will provide a way for new discoveries to be made. Who knows if even bigger animals are out there?
